Goodroad, Horning named Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing
July 1, 2025

Clinical Professor Brian Goodroad, DNP, APRN, CNP, FAANP, and Associate Professor Melissa Horning, PhD, RN, PHN, were named to the 2025 Class of American Academy of Nursing Fellows. The achievement is considered one of the highest honors in the nursing profession. The Academy represents nursing’s most accomplished leaders in policy, research, administration, practice and academia.
Goodroad's scholarship is devoted to educating community health care providers about caring for individuals with HIV and advancing advanced practice registered nursing practice through health policy. His long-standing commitment to HIV education is evident through his involvement with the Midwest AIDS Training and Education Center (MATEC) since the late 1980s, where he currently serves as the clinical advisor. He has been a prominent figure in the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC), advocating for nurses during the HIV epidemic. He played a key role in forming the Nurse Practitioner Association of Minnesota, contributing to the establishment of Minnesota Nurse Practitioners (MNNP), and championing full-practice authority legislation.
Horning's research focuses on enhancing access to and consumption of nutritious foods. This research focus stems from client questions she heard in practice as a public health nurse about how to access and afford nutritious food. Through a cluster randomized trial funded by the National Institutes of Health, she and her community partners are evaluating the effectiveness of a full-service mobile grocery store, the Twin Cities Mobile Market, that brings affordable and nutritious food to underserved communities. They are assessing the impact of the full-service mobile market on diet quality, food security, and the amounts of fruits and vegetables brought into the home. Horning strives to develop sustainable solutions for addressing food insecurity and improving food access, in collaboration with committed community partners.
