Course Description
This 1-credit course will focus on population health and interprofessional practice at the community level. Students will observe all three levels of the highly effective Cuban health care system including neighborhood primary care clinics, local multi-specialty clinics, and acute care hospitals. Cuba’s system is truly focused on health care rather than illness care, therefore we will also have an opportunity to see Maternal Homes for women with high-risk pregnancies, community centers serving at-risk neighborhoods, and other programs specifically designed to address social determinants of health. We will be observing and learning from Cuban providers, but we will not provide nursing care ourselves. The host for our experiences is MEDICC. MEDICC promotes US-Cuba health collaboration and highlights Cuba’s public health approaches to inform the quest for health equity and universal health worldwide.
Course work will include pre-trip readings and one short pre-trip assignment to prepare you for the cross-cultural experience. A short graduate level reflective paper is required when you return from Cuba.
Estimated cost per student
$4300-$4800 - UMN tuition/fees are not included in the estimated cost. The estimated cost is a rough estimate and will be determined by the price of airfare at the time you purchase your ticket as well as our final lodging cost.

Student Eligibility
You must be a current University of Minnesota School of Nursing DNP, MN, or PhD student in good standing and have a US passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel. Please consider that there can be quite a bit of walking over rough terrain.

Please complete the application and submit to tmpotter@umn.edu. DNP in Health Innovation and Leadership and Post-Masters DNP students receive priority consideration as the focus of this course is on health care innovation and leadership. Other DNP specialties may attend but have second priority. PhD and MN students are third priority.Â
A minimum of ten students is needed to run this course but up to 18 can participate.
* For Health Innovation and Leadership students this course meets the requirement for the 3-credit elective currently on your specialty program grid. It also meets 120 hours for the N7605 Boundary-Spanning practicum. All other graduate students please confirm with your DNP, PhD and MN program advisor on allowable hours and credits within your program of study.
