Global experience in Kenya

Course description

This 7-day immersion course will bring students to urban and rural settings in Nairobi and Mombasa. Students will experience healthcare and mental healthcare in the context of environment, race, culture and policy. Experiential learning is in collaboration with University of Nairobi.

Activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Interdisciplinary seminar at Aga Khan and Nairobi Hospital
  • Visit Sexual assault/domestic violence center at Nairobi Women’s Hospital
  • Meet with advocates in the Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya
  • Learn from health experts from USAID and U.S. Embassy
  • Learn with nursing students at University of Nairobi and Coast General Hospital
  • Other adventures include African Wildlife Safari, Elephant rescue and Giraffe Center, experience African culture, food and music, explore the port city of Mombasa and experience the Indian Ocean.

Estimated cost per student

$4600 excluding airfare, which includes: Housing, most breakfasts and 4 dinners, beach picnic in the port city of Mombasa, in-country transportation while in Nairobi and roundtrip to Mombasa, lectures and learning experiences, and safari admittance.
Additional costs include SoN Global fee: ($280), International Travel insurance ($20), visa fee (estimate $75), admission into the Elephant Rescue and Giraffe Hospital.
Additional cost for MN and PhD students includes registration for 1 credit course (NURS 5812).

Student eligibility

You must be a current University of Minnesota School of Nursing MN or DNP student in good standing and have a US passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the date of travel.
