The 2026 NKBDS Conference marks an important milestone in the evolution of the NKBDS Initiative. As the initiative concludes its 2021-2026 strategic planning cycle, the accomplishments documented throughout these proceedings demonstrate the collective impact of a community committed to advancing nursing knowledge through data science, informatics, interoperability, education, policy, and innovation. Workgroups have developed standards, frameworks, educational resources, toolkits, policy and advocacy initiatives, and collaborative networks that continue to strengthen the visibility, usability, and value of nursing data across healthcare settings.
At the same time, the discussions throughout the conference suggest that the initiative is entering a new phase of maturity. Across keynote presentations, executive discussions, workgroup reports, and action planning sessions, participants repeatedly emphasized the importance of moving beyond the development of concepts, models, and resources toward implementation, adoption, evaluation, and measurable impact. This shift reflects both the progress achieved during its 2013-2026 history and the opportunities that lie ahead.
Several themes emerged consistently throughout the conference and may help inform future strategic planning efforts. These include strengthening academic-practice partnerships, preparing nurses for future practice environments through competency-based education, advancing interoperability and sharable nursing data, expanding leadership engagement, and continuing to demonstrate the value of nursing through meaningful measurement and outcomes. The conference also highlighted the growing importance of ensuring that nurses are prepared to lead in areas such as digital health, artificial intelligence, population health, climate resilience, and data-driven decision making.
The workgroup action plans point to a related shift: the initiative is moving from developing individual products toward integrating them and building a sustainable implementation and dissemination infrastructure. Across multiple workgroups, priorities include adoption of standardized nursing data models, broader dissemination of educational resources, implementation of toolkits and frameworks, development of open-access learning platforms, creation of innovation blueprints, and expansion of advocacy efforts designed to increase the visibility and impact of NKBDS products. These efforts reflect an increasing emphasis on ensuring that the work of the initiative is translated into practice, education, policy, and health system transformation.
Artificial intelligence emerged as a cross-cutting theme throughout the conference and across workgroup activities. Discussions expanded beyond AI literacy and workforce preparation to include responsible implementation, governance, terminology mapping, interoperability, innovation, analytics, nursing value measurement, and the use of AI-enabled tools to support knowledge development and dissemination. Collectively, these efforts reinforce the importance of ensuring that nurses remain active leaders in shaping the future of AI-enabled healthcare.
Another important evolution of the initiative is the increasing integration among workgroups. Several action plans highlighted opportunities and new collaborations across domains, including data science, determinants of health, interoperability, education, policy, nursing value, and documentation transformation. These collaborations demonstrate growing recognition that many of the challenges facing healthcare require coordinated, interdisciplinary approaches. Continued efforts to strengthen communication, shared resources, and cross-workgroup initiatives will help reduce duplication, improve efficiency, and accelerate the translation of nursing knowledge into action.
Participants identified opportunities to strengthen the organizational infrastructure that supports the work of the Initiative. As NKBDS continues to grow, clear communication pathways, leader and member onboarding resources, dissemination strategies, shared templates and tools, and more mechanisms for measuring impact will become increasingly important. Several discussions highlighted the need to improve visibility and accessibility of NKBDS products, strengthen recruitment and engagement strategies, and create additional sustainable approaches for supporting workgroup leaders and volunteers. Greater coordination of survey activities, educational initiatives, and dissemination efforts may further enhance the effectiveness of the initiative while reducing burden on participants and stakeholders.
Finally, discussions reinforced the opportunity for NKBDS to further establish itself as a trusted source of knowledge and expertise regarding nursing data, informatics, digital health, interoperability, artificial intelligence, and technology-enabled care. These 13-year accomplishments and the 2021-2026 strategic planning cycle demonstrate the Initiative's ability to convene experts, generate innovative solutions, and advance nursing knowledge. The next phase of growth will require continued investment in partnerships, dissemination, leadership engagement, implementation science, and measurable demonstration of impact.
As NKBDS develops its 2026-2031 strategic plan, the initiative is well positioned to build upon the strong foundation established during its previous five years. The challenge ahead is to leverage the new frameworks, models, and resources, and ensure that these innovations are adopted, implemented, evaluated, and sustained in ways that improve nursing practice and education, healthcare, and health outcomes. Through continued collaboration, leadership, and innovation the NKBDS community remains proactively engaged with industry and discovery. The NKBDS initiative is uniquely positioned to advance the future of nursing knowledge in an increasingly digital, interconnected, and data-driven world.
