From the dean: At the intersection of compassionate care and digital innovation

Reflecting on the stories shared in this issue of Minnesota Nursing magazine, a powerful theme emerges: the profound intersection of rapidly advancing technology and the irreplaceable heart of nursing. In an era rapidly becoming defined by digital innovation and the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), the School of Nursing’s longstanding commitment to holistic, equitable and compassionate care has never been more important.

This issue shares vivid examples of how our school is leading the conversation on integrating technology thoughtfully and with humanity. Assistant Professor Fang Lei, PhD, MPH, RN, illustrates how technology can be used to empower patients and address gaps in lung cancer detection. Another article shares how we are incorporating immersive virtual reality and simulation into our maternal-newborn practicums to ensure that every student safely navigates high-stakes clinical scenarios before graduation. We share how the analysis conducted by our Ethics in AI Initiative makes clear that AI cannot replicate the moral agency, ethical reasoning and compassionate presence that define our profession.

While technology is prevalent through these pages, this issue remains deeply rooted in the people and communities we serve. There are features of students like Laura Pratt, who was a professional ballerina and now aims to provide nurse anesthesia care to underserved rural and Indigenous communities, and Kiki Quarry, a PhD student from Hawaii whose interests lie in improving emergency and disaster nursing. 

The stories of our students, faculty, staff and alumni continue to serve as reminders of our purpose and provide inspiration. Their voices, and yours, are essential in guiding our future, and we welcome your feedback and appreciate your continued support.
