Biography

Bio

Dr. Giama is a public health nurse interested in the intersection of health education and culture with a primary emphasis on health promotion and prevention in immigrant populations and adolescents. Dr. Giama is clinical associate professor in the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and an assistant professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Giama provides professional, scholarly leadership in four primary areas: (1) health promotion and prevention, (2) scholarship focused on methods to promote the health and well-being of immigrant and refugee communities through community engagement strategies (3) transforming health equity and social justice in nursing education, (4) mentorship for diverse students in healthcare.
 

Research Summary

My funded projects and publications are focused around disparities in health related to liver cancer, viral hepatitis, and developing interventions to deliver culturally and linguistically tailored care to immigrant communities a s well as coordination national and international studies on the early detection and prevention of liver and bile duct cancers. Additionally, my community health funded projects aim to promote the educational attainment of minority students as well as implementing coalition building interventions to increase community capacity.
