Maulah Baker Banks, DNP, RN, PHN, NEA-BC

Dr. Maulah Baker Banks, DNP, RN, PHN, NEA-BC, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Population Health and Systems Cooperative at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. A proud School of Nursing alumna, Dr. Banks earned a Master of Science in Nursing as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Doctor of Nursing Practice with a Nurse Executive specialization from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. 

Dr. Banks brings more than 30 years of nursing experience and more than 20 years of progressive leadership across complex healthcare systems. Her expertise includes nursing education, systems leadership, population health, health equity, workforce development, quality improvement, and organizational transformation. Her doctoral scholarly project focused on improving hospital throughput and reducing emergency department overcrowding. A DAISY Team Award recipient and Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar, Dr. Banks is passionate about preparing the next generation of nurses through transformative education, lifelong learning, and evidence-based practice.

Dr. Banks's teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that every learner brings unique experiences, strengths, and perspectives that enrich the educational environment. She is committed to creating inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning spaces where students are challenged to think critically, apply evidence to practice, and develop confidence in their clinical judgment and leadership abilities. Through collaboration, reflection, and active learning, she encourages students to embrace lifelong learning, professional accountability, and a commitment to improving health outcomes.

Dr. Banks believes nurses are uniquely positioned to connect patients, families, communities, and healthcare systems to improve health outcomes and advance health equity. She is committed to preparing the next generation of nurses to lead with courage and compassion, think critically, advocate for patients and communities, advance health equity, challenge barriers to access and opportunity, and improve the health and well-being of the populations they serve.

Outside of academia, Dr. Banks enjoys spending time with family, nurturing indoor plants, home renovation and furniture restoration projects, traveling, cruising, exploring diverse cultures, and creating welcoming spaces that foster connection and community.
