Seminar in Nursing Informatics

Course Description

The goal of the Seminar in Nursing Informatics course is to provide learners with the essential informatics and digital health knowledge and skills needed for individuals beginning nursing practice. This course is designed to be compatible with the updated American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Essentials of entry-level professional nursing education programs for Domain 8: Informatics and Healthcare Technologies competencies and sub-competencies.

Learning Objectives

By the completion of this course, you should be better able to:

  1. Appreciate the value of nursing knowledge work, informatics literacy, and the role of emerging technologies in the advancement of nursing science and the delivery of high quality safe nursing care within the context of a learning healthcare system.
  2. Explain the nurse’s role in supporting and engaging people in the adoption, use, and meaningful evaluation of technologies and resources that promote health and prevent disease.
  3. Describe and explain the evolution and development of nursing informatics to support care delivery across healthcare contexts.
  4. Understand the use of clinical information systems (CIS) and the electronic health record (EHR) to support decisions and document nursing value in service of healthcare’s quadruple aim: improve patient experience, improved health of populations, health care cost reduction, and improved work life of health care professionals.
  5. Demonstrate skills in using patient care technologies, information systems, and communication devices that support safe nursing practice.
  6. Apply safeguards and decision making support tools embedded in patient care technologies and information systems to support a safe practice environment for both patients and healthcare workers.
  7. Discuss the influence of policy and ethics, in regard to patient engagement, clinical decision support and the delivery of safe, high quality care.
  8. Discuss future trends and issues related to nursing informatics that support and influence the science of nursing informatics and the advancement of practice, education and research.

Certificate/CEUs

This course is designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing requirements for up to 15.0 contact hours of continuing nursing education.

However, the individual nurse is responsible for determining whether this course meets the requirements for their State Board of Nursing for acceptable continuing education.
