A collaboration between the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and Essentia Health
Purpose of the grant:
- In partnership with Essentia Health (EH), recruit and retain a total of 12 APRN students living in northern Minnesota rural communities to the University of Minnesota School of Nursing (UMN SoN) doctor of nursing practice (DNP) program.
- In partnership with Essentia Health, increase the number of new clinical training sites in rural Minnesota in or near the students’ rural communities to accommodate their clinical training needs.
- Further strengthen clinical and didactic education in health equity, cultural responsiveness, and team-based primary care for APRN students in the DNP program at the UMN SoN.
Benefits to Students:
- Opportunity to apply to a rigorous, well developed, hybrid Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program (since 2009) covering the following specialties: FNP, AGNP-PC, PNP-PC, WHNP, NM, PMHNP, CNS and Nurse Anesthesia.

- Virtual and in-person recruitment events to receive information, respond to questions
- Clinical training sites within the Essentia Health system: practice where you live and work!
- Monetary support for transportation and lodging to and from the University of Minnesota for on campus classes and activities (on campus time varies by program)
- Support through the Office of Student Services for information, application assistance, access to university resources and linkage with financial resources
- Access to the university library and interprofessional collaboration across the university academic health service
