McMorris, Muthya receive awards at MNRS

Associate Professor Barb McMorris, PhD, and BSN student Shivani Muthya received awards at the 48th annual Midwest Nursing Research Society (MNRS) Conference in Minneapolis.

McMorris was awarded Distinguished Abstract by MNRS for her abstract Are Adolescents’ Social Emotional Skills and Physical Activity Levels Protective Against Anxiety and Depression? Findings From the DiscoverU Afterschool Demonstration Project.

Muthya received first place for her poster Food Pricing Inequities: Quantifying the Price Differential across Four Major Food Retailers and a Mobile Food Market Aiming to Improve Access to Affordable Nutritious Food.

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing cohosted the conference with Mayo Clinic, Winona State University, Minnesota State University Mankato and the University of St. Thomas. The conference was held on Feb. 28-March 2, with Gov. Tim Walz declaring Feb. 28, 2024, Nursing Research Day in Minnesota. The proclamation declaring Nursing Research Day stated, in part, “The collaborative efforts of Minnesota’s nursing scientists are instrumental in improving the quality of care and the health of people, thereby setting a standard for excellence in health care both nationally and internationally.”

Twenty-seven faculty and students shared their research at the conference through poster, paper and symposium sessions. They include faculty members Wendy Looman, Barb McMorris, Laura Kirk, Robin Austin, Priya Rajamani, Esther Moon, Jenna Marquard, Anne McKechnie, Jiwoo Lee and Camille Brown. Students include Amanda Davis, Anna Graefe, Megan Holle Whipps, Bella Xiong, Anny Smith, Meg Schoenbauer, Shivani Muthya, Alex Woelfel, Annie Bell, Malin Britt, Emily Erickson, Kelli Fee-Schroder, Tipper Gallagher, Rida Jantraporn, Marshall Muehlbauer, Sue Park and Lynn Tanner.
