Nursing research on a stick?

School of Nursing staff at the Research Booth at the Minnesota State Fair

Known as “the Great Minnesota Get-Together,” the Minnesota State Fair attracts nearly 2 million visitors during its 12-day run. While the pronto pups and butter sculptures may capture the headlines, this annual gathering provides an extraordinary opportunity for University researchers to engage with the public.

This year at the University’s Driven to Discovery Research Facility four School of Nursing faculty researchers will bring their work to Minnesota’s favorite annual activity in a fun, convenient way.

Assistant Professor Barbara Beacham, PhD, RN, will be recruiting families for her CLIMB the pathway to better illness management study on five days this year, including the opening morning. Associate Professor Casey Hooke, PhD, APRN, CPON, PCNS-BC, will also be at the fair when it opens on Thursday, Aug. 23. Associate Professor Niloufar Hadidi, PhD, APRN, CNS-BC, FAHA, will be at the fair on Saturday, Aug. 25 and 30, while Professor Jayne Fulkerson, PhD, will begin the first of her four days in the D2D facility on Monday, Aug. 27.

A complete schedule of research being conducted each day can be found here. The Driven to Discover Research Facility is located at 1367 Cosgrove St. on the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

Lead Researcher Description
CLIMB the pathway to better illness management Barbara Beacham, PhD, RN Childhood Lifelong Illness Management Blueprint – CLIMB. Having a child with a lifelong illness like asthma, cystic fibrosis, diabetes or sickle cell disease affects both the child and the family. We are developing a registry to include families of children with lifelong illnesses for future testing of a Child Version of the Family Management Measure. Joining the registry takes less than 10 minutes will allow us to contact you when we need parents and children to help us test the measure. Please consider joining us to help you CLIMB the pathway to better health management.
Eligibility: Children under age 18, diagnosed with a lifelong health condition and their family. DATES: Aug. 23, 24, 26, 29 and Sept. 1.
Step Up and Mooove! Casey Hooke, PhD, APRN, CPON, PCNS-BC We want to learn more about Minnesota children and teens level of physical activity. How active are they in their usual life? Participants will complete two short surveys on an iPad. We also want to compare what kids tell us about their physical activity to measurements on a step test. This test measures how quickly their heart rate recovers after a 3 minute stepping activity. Participants step up and down an 8-inch step 24 times per minute for 3 minutes. We give you the beat to step to – it is not a race. We have you wear a heart monitor on your wrist. After the 3 minutes, we check your heart rate 5 seconds after stopping and 1 minute after.
Eligibility: Kids aged 8 to 18, able to walk on your own, able to step up and down an 8-inch step, don’t have any chronic illnesses and can answer questions. DATES: Aug. 23 and 24
A Stroke of Genius: Who knows more Niloufar Hadidi, PhD, APRN, CNS-BC, FAHA Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds. Do you want to know your risk for stroke based on your blood pressure and other health factors? Do you know about signs and symptoms of stroke? Are you knowledgeable about warning signs of stroke? We will assess your risk of getting a stroke per your current and health history, and  your knowledge of stroke warning signs and risk factors.
