Biography

Biographical Summary

Dr. Hayden's expertise is in cardiology, cardiac surgery, heart and lung transplantation and prevention. Dr Hayden is passionate about providing the highest quality of care to her patients. Her interest in evidence-based practice and quality improvement developed as a result of her advanced practice nurse position and interest in performing quality improvement projects within the field of heart and lung transplantation and heart failure. This passion led her to join the faculty at the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing and be part of the training of the next generation of nurse practitioners. Dr. Hayden is a leader in the FNP Program. Mentoring new faculty has contributed to increased quality of teaching within the FNP specialty program to provide students with best practices education and learning opportunities. Dr. Hayden has been part of cultivating new relationships and enhancing practice partnerships, which has increased access for FNP students to develop clinical skills and gain experience towards core competencies by working one-on-one with our clinical preceptors. Dr. Hayden also serves in leadership capacity at the local, state and national levels. 

Dr. Hayden's teaching, clinical practice/service, and scholarship reflect her dedication to providing inclusive, evidence-based care to her patients and to ensure the healthcare providers of the future are well prepared to provide equitable care to their patients and to serve as powerful advocates for their patients and their families, their clinical practice, and their profession.

Research Summary

Dr. Hayden's expertise is in transplant nursing, and cardiovascular topics, including cardiothoracic surgery, heart, heart/lung and lung transplantation. Currently, Dr. Hayden is an expert clinical consultant on the NIH-funded R01 grant entitled, “Development of a Bariatric Mannequin System to Enable Realistic Examination Simulations of Obese Patients”, Phase I and Phase II. She is collaborating with Dr. Donna Bliss (study PI) to provide clinical expertise in the area of cardiovascular and pulmonary function in relation to the unique needs of bariatric patients. As the only APRN working on this research project, Dr. Hayden has been able to combine her clinical healthcare provider expertise and her teaching experience to assist with innovations, designs and implementation of the bariatric mannequin.

Dr. Hayden served as the nurse practitioner expert on a multidisciplinary team for the Rasmussen CV Prevention research, “Predictive Value of Early Cardiovascular Disease Screening on Cardiovascular Outcomes”, a 5-year retrospective data analysis exploring early detection and prevention of heart disease.

Teaching Summary

Dr. Hayden has demonstrated expertise and leadership in the education mission at the University of Minnesota, School of Nursing. She is recognized for her knowledge and skill in teaching core didactic courses and FNP practicum courses within the DNP program, using her clinical expertise to inform her teaching. Dr. Hayden has consistently demonstrated her commitment to serving as a mentor for students and faculty.

Clinical Summary

Dr. Hayden has extensive experience in caring for individuals with complex chronic conditions across the lifespan, including children and adults who have undergone heart and lung transplants. Dr. Hayden has extensive advanced practice experience and has worked in inpatient, outpatient, and corporate settings. She is able to weave her experience of chronic disease management, acute disease management and integrative therapies into her teaching. By promoting evidence-based thinking into her teaching style, she assists students in developing clinical reasoning skills for their actions that are in alignment with the current standard of care.
