Leading the charge in AI, data science

April 14, 2026

The center continues to demonstrate strong leadership and visibility across national and international informatics communities, reflecting the growing influence of nursing informatics at the intersection of data science, artificial intelligence, education and practice.

Several center faculty participated in the AMIA Annual Symposium. Associate Professor Sripriya Rajamani, PhD, MBBS, MPH, FAMIA, served as vice chair of the Symposium and was a member of the leadership committee that shaped the educational program. Associate Professor Robin Austin, PhD, DNP, DC, RN, NI-BC, FAMIA, FAAN, delivered four presentations highlighting collaborative work across a range of informatics topics, while Professor Jenna Marquard, PhD, FACMI, and Assistant Professor Christie Martin, PhD, MPH, RN-BC, LHIT-HP, PHN, co-authored and presented two pre-conference workshops focused on informatics education and practice.

Center faculty also contributed to regional nursing informatics leadership, with Austin and Rajamani presenting at the 2025 Fall Symposium for the Midwest Chapter of the American Nursing Informatics Association. Looking ahead to the spring, Austin is teaching a special topics course, AI in Healthcare: Transforming Nursing Practice, which examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into health care and its implications for nursing practice, patient care, research and health care management.

Within the school, Marquard is leading the School of Nursing AI Initiative Taskforce. Internationally, Associate Professor Martin Michalowski, PhD, FAMIA, is expanding global collaborations through a year-long sabbatical at the University of Maribor. He was elected co-president of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIME) society, and he is serving as a member of the Senior Program Committee for the 24th International AIME Conference, to be held in Ottawa in July. Additionally, Dean Connie White Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, FNAP, will host the Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science Conference in June.

As informatics and artificial intelligence converge, nursing is uniquely positioned to lead innovation and elevate patient care.
