Carolyn Porta, PhD, MPH, RN, FAAN, professor and associate vice president for clinical affairs, was appointed to serve as a member of the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

With this four year appointment, Porta and other NACNEP members will provide nursing workforce advice and recommendations on federal policy, program and general regulation development to the Secretary of Health and Human Services and Congress with respect to the administration of Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act. This includes a range of issues and solutions relating to the nursing workforce, nurse supply, education and practice.

“It is an honor to be invited and to have the opportunity to discourse with colleagues and propose solutions to pressing nursing workforce challenges in the United States, including recruitment, retention and financial structures. I will encourage our body to be creative, courageous and original in our exploration of what we need to achieve optimal nursing everywhere,” says Porta, the Pauline A. Vincent Chair in Public Health Nursing.

NACNEP members represent leading experts in fields of nursing, schools of nursing, advanced practice nurses, hospitals and other organizations which provide nursing services, the general public and full-time nursing students.
