Center for Artificial Intelligence and Nursing Informatics

Building on more than two decades of leadership in nursing informatics, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing announced the evolution of its nursing informatics center into the Center for Artificial Intelligence and Nursing Informatics. This expanded vision reflects the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence (AI), digital health, and data science in transforming healthcare systems while reinforcing the center's longstanding commitment to nursing knowledge, interoperability, workforce development, and innovation.

“As healthcare enters a new era defined by artificial intelligence and digital transformation, the center is committed to ensuring that nursing knowledge, patient experience, and human values remain at the forefront of innovation,” says Center Director Robin Austin, PhD, DNP, DC, NI-BC, FAMIA, FAAN. “By advancing responsible AI, interoperable data infrastructure, and nursing knowledge science, the center will help shape the future of healthcare where technology enhances, not replaces, human-centered care.”

Austin serves as director of the center with co-directors Connie White Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, FNAP, Martin Michalowski, PhD, FAMIA, and Sripriya Rajamani, PhD, MBBS, MPH.

The center is recognized for its longstanding leadership in nursing informatics, the globally recognized Omaha System Partnership, the United States' only International Classification for Nursing Practice Research and Development Center. It serves as the scholarly home of the Nursing Knowledge Big Data Science Initiative, advancing nursing-sensitive data, standardized terminologies, common data models, knowledge representation, interoperability, and analytics that make nursing contributions visible, measurable, and AI-ready across learning health systems.
