Biography

Biographical Summary

Mary DeGrote Goering, PhD, RN-BC, is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Her research examines how factors like nurse staffing ratios, nursing education levels, and work environments impact healthcare quality and patient safety outcomes in acute care settings. DeGrote Goering has conducted numerous studies on the relationships between nursing human resources and quality metrics such as patient falls, pressure ulcers, and hospital-acquired infections. Her work aims to generate evidence to inform optimal staffing plans and workforce policies.

In addition to her research, DeGrote Goering teaches undergraduate courses on adult and older adult nursing care. She was recently selected as a 2022 Distinguished Educator in Gerontological Nursing by the National Hartford Center. DeGrote Goering facilitates student practicums in gerontological nursing and serves as the Geriatric Nursing Champion at UMN, ensuring integration of aging content across programs. She is also the current president of the university's Zeta Chapter of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
