The University of Minnesota School of Nursing enrolled the largest number of American Indian/Alaska Native students in a Doctor of Nursing Practice program in the country. Fourteen new AI/AN students joined two previously enrolled students, for a total of 16 AI/AN students.

The School of Nursing promotes health care and planetary health at state, national and global levels. Faculty and staff are engaged across public and private sectors and disciplines globally. A commitment to service and practice informed by pragmatic realism provides a framework for both students and faculty to work effectively in complex, high-needs environments.

New center launches to improve Indigenous health outcomes 

The Center for Indigenous People, Health and Nursing of North America launched to minimize health disparities to improve health outcomes for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people, families and communities. 

New center launches to restore planetary health 

The School of Nursing announced the launch of the Center for Planetary Health and Environmental Justice to educate future planetary health leaders, promote planetary health practice and advance innovative research. 

Creating flourishing health care communities 

The Center for Flourishing Health Care Communities is a new partnership between the School of Nursing and University of Minnesota Rochester that aims to integrate applied research, practice and education for nurses and other health professionals to increase the retention and recruitment of nurses in Minnesota. The collaboration stems from the University’s system-wide MNtersections initiative aimed at optimizing health education to increase the pipeline of well-prepared health care workers and support student wellbeing.

CNEE becomes Minnesota’s official nursing workforce center 

Citing the growing needs of the nursing workforce in the state, the Minnesota Center for Nursing board transferred its membership in the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers to the Center for Nursing Equity and Excellence (CNEE) housed at the University of Minnesota. 

Densford Center hosts parallel event during UN Commission on the Status of Women 

Associate Professor Anne Chevalier McKechine, PhD, RN, moderated the panel discussion Innovative Strategies Advancing Interprofessional Education to Improve Women’s Health at the parallel event during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68) Forum. Rural APRN conference focuses on cannabis, mental health 

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing hosted the rural Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Conference Cannabis and Mental Health Care: Exploring intersections with advanced nursing practice in April. 

School hosts Planting Seeds of Innovation Colloquium 

Oriana Beaudet, DNP, RN, FAAN, vice president of Nursing Innovation for the ANA Enterprise, delivered the keynote at the Planting Seeds of Innovation Colloquium. The colloquium guided participants through the process of growing an innovation seed into action. 

Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science Conference focuses on AI, ethics and innovation 

The Nursing Knowledge: Big Data Science Conference brought nurse leaders and informaticists from public and private institutions across the United States to Minneapolis in June to discuss the improvement of health and health care by using nursing knowledge empowered by informatics. 

Sexual assault victim survivors have new tool to assist in seeking care 

People seeking health care or additional assistance after a sexual assault now can access a first-of-its-kind map to locate where to find help. The map, which shows sexual assault nurse exam availability and advocacy locations across the state of Minnesota, is the result of a partnership led by Professor Carolyn Porta, PhD, RN, SANE-A, FAAN, and the Re LAB team with U-Spatial and the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Violence.

University, M Health Fairview partner for VR simulations 

M Health Fairview launched a groundbreaking Nurse Residency Pilot Program at University of Minnesota Medical Center in 2023 to revolutionize the way new nurses are trained. One of the group’s first sessions was held at the School of Nursing’s Bentson Healthy Communities Innovation Center to experience how immersive virtual reality (VR) technology benefits new nurses.

Planetary Health Lectureship delves into Indigenous food systems 

Lyla June Johnston delivered the 4th annual Planetary Health Lectureship Remembering our Ecological Purpose: Indigenous Food Systems and the Promise of Homo Sapiens, which detailed Indigenous food systems and advocated for a mind shift to better tend the land. 

MDH partners with Potter in how-to video about discussing climate change with patients 

The Minnesota Department of Health partnered with Teddie Potter, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP, director of Planetary Health, to create a video about how to discuss the health impacts of climate change with patients.
