School celebrates its 115th anniversary 

The School of Nursing is celebrating its 115th anniversary. Founded in 1909, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing was the first nursing program established within a university. As part of the celebrations the book Igniting Transformational Change: The University of Minnesota School of Nursing Journey will be published. It is authored by Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, Mary Jo Kreitzer, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP, Marie Manthey, MNA, FAAN, and Connie White Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, FNAP. 

12 faculty join the school 

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing welcomed 12 new faculty to the school. They bring expertise ranging from HIV, Indigenous health and cardiovascular care to substance use disorders and planetary health. 

Fulkerson named a McKnight Presidential Chair in Nursing Professor 

Jayne Fulkerson, PhD, is the first professor at the School of Nursing to be named a McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair, which is among the highest honors at the University of Minnesota. 

For 8th consecutive year, school recognized for excellence in diversity 

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing was one of only 15 nursing schools to receive the Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine. 

School receives A– on Planetary Health Report Card 

The University of Minnesota School of Nursing received an A- on the 2024 Planetary Health Report Card, which is a metric-based tool for evaluating and improving planetary health content. 

11 Global Health Faculty Scholars named 

Eleven faculty were named Global Health Scholars. The program supports the advancement of global health through meaningful partnerships around the world. 

School receives Minnesota Performance Excellence Award 

The School of Nursing received the Minnesota Performance Excellence Award from the Performance Excellence Network. The award is based on the Baldrige Framework and is the culmination of a rigorous evaluation of an organization’s management and performance system. The evaluation criteria consider leadership, strategic planning and knowledge management. 

University of Minnesota cohosts MNRS conference 

In addition to cohosting the Midwest Nursing Research Society conference in Minneapolis, Associate Professor Barb McMorris, PhD, was awarded Distinguished Abstract, BSN student Shivani Muthya received first place for her poster and 25 other faculty and students discussed their research at the conference during poster, paper and symposium presentations.

Awards and Honors 

Dean Connie White Delaney, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, FNAP, received the HIMSS-ANI Nursing Informatics Leadership Award for her significant leadership contributions to optimize health engagements and care outcomes through information and technology. 

Assistant Professor Robin Austin, PhD, DNP, DC, RNBC, FAMIA, FNAP, and Associate Professor Sripriya Rajamani, PhD, MPH, MBBS, FAMIA, were named the recipients of the Academic Forum Best Paper Award for Updating of a Doctoral Nursing Informatics Program to Align with AACN Essentials, Industry Trends, and Workforce Needs. 

Associate Professor Rozina Bhimani, PhD, DNP, APRN, CNP, CNE, CRRN, received the Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education Award and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers. 

Clinical Professor Sherry Chesak, PhD, RN, was inducted into the National Academies of Practice. 

Jennifer Eccles, PhD, RN, FAADN, executive director of the Center for Nursing Equity and Excellence, was elected to serve as secretary of the National Forum of State Nursing Workforce Centers Board of Directors. 

Professor Niloufar Hadidi, PhD, APRN, CNS-BC, FAHA, received the 2023 Mathy Mezey Excellence in Aging Award from the American Heart Association. 

Clinical Associate Professor Dorcas Kunkel, DNP, RN, PHN, CNE, CPHIMS, CDIP, was inducted into the National Academies of Practice. 

Professor Jenna Marquard, PhD, FACMI, was inducted into the American College of Medical Informatics. 

Associate Professor Martin Michalowski, PhD, FAMIA, was elected to the 2024 class of Academy Fellows of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. 

Professor and Associate Dean for Nursing and Health Policy Margaret Moss, PhD, JD, RN, FAAN, an enrolled member of the Three Affiliated Tribes, was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine. 

Professor Christine Mueller, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN was appointed by Gov. Tim Walz to the Minnesota Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities. 

Clinical Professor Judith Pechacek, DNP, RN, CENP was a recipient of the Award for Excellence in Academic Unit Service from the University of Minnesota. 

Clinical Professor Barbara Peterson, PhD, APRN, PMHCNS-BC, FNAP, was named the International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses board president. 

Population-Based Public Health Clinical Manual: The Henry Street Model for Nurses, 4th edition, co-edited by Professor Carolyn Porta, PhD, RN, FAAN, received a first place 2023 American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award in the Public and Population Health category. 

Teddie Potter, PhD, RN, FAAN, FNAP, director of planetary health, was appointed to the inaugural advisory committee of Climate Crossroads, a major climate initiative from the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. 

Clinical Assistant Professor Ryne Wilson, DNP, RN, OCN, was appointed to the Oncology Nursing Society Board of Directors.
