Professor Wendy Looman’s abstract Resilience and Wellbeing: Youth Perceptions of Protective Factors During Normative and Non-Normative Stressors was named a Distinguished Abstract among all abstracts submitted for paper presentation to the Midwest Nursing Research Society 2022 Annual Research Conference. In collaboration with a team of faculty and student co-investigators, Looman, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC, utilized a timeline drawing activity to assist youth to draw and tell about their life over the past year. The activity is a new tool to assess youth resilience and coping. More than 500 youth have participated in the study at the Minnesota State Fair.

The study found that youth who had experienced recent adversity were more likely to describe supportive relationships as resources for coping. In addition, youth who completed the activity in 2021 were more likely than youth who completed the activity in 2019 to report mental health concerns and school, home and peer-related stresses. Many youth attributed these stresses to the pandemic.
