The University of Minnesota School of Nursing celebrated the graduation of 62 Master of Nursing (MN) and 19 Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students at a commencement ceremony Friday, Dec. 13 at Northrop.
Jan Malcolm, Minnesota Department of Health commissioner, delivered the commencement address. As commissioner, Malcolm directs the state’s lead public health agency, responsible for protecting, maintaining and improving the health of all Minnesotans.
With the World Health Organization’s designation of 2020 as the Year of the Nurse in honor of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday, Malcolm spoke about the legacy of Nightingale and her relevance today. “I would argue that her combination of technical skill and zeal for reform remains a useful model for how we can make things better in our own ways as we head into the third decade of the 21st Century,” said Malcolm. “I encourage you to follow Florence Nightingale’s example in asking the tough questions, looking for how things can be done better and putting the needs of patients first.”
Mitchell Peery, a MN graduate, and Emilienne Anderson, a DNP graduate, provided remarks on behalf of students.
Dean Connie White Delaney presented the graduates to Regent Kao Ly Ilean Her, who conferred the degrees to the graduates.
“You inherit a legacy of being a member of the most trusted profession in the nation. As a graduate from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing your potential is boundless,” said Delaney.
