February 14, 2020
Doctor of Nursing Practice students Deborah St. Anthony, MEd, BSN, RN, and Hannah Shibeshi, BAN, RN, CNRN, CCRN, and PhD student Meghan Hultman, MSN, RN, were the inaugural recipients of the Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GSNA) Excellence in PhD-DNP Collaboration Award.
The award was presented at the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Doctoral Education Conference in Naples, Florida on Jan. 30. The students were selected to present their poster PhD/DNP Collaboration Project to Improve Patient Outcomes for Stroke Survivor and Caregiver Dyads at the conference.
The team, under the guidance of Associate Professor Niloufar Hadidi, PhD, APRN, CNS-BC, FAHA, developed a two‐arm intervention randomized controlled trial for stroke survivors and their caregivers. St. Anthony and Shibeshi provided stroke‐related health education, and Hultman delivered a Problem‐Solving Therapy psychosocial intervention.
The DNP students individually evaluated the effectiveness of health education on improving stroke literacy and willingness to change behavior. The PhD student evaluated the feasibility of Problem‐Solving Therapy and its effect on measures of wellbeing, including depression, health-related quality of life, caregiver burden and functionality.
The GNSA Excellence in PhD-DNP Collaboration Award was established to recognize the outstanding work underway to advance the nursing profession through an innovative and synergistic approach in translating research into practice and generating new knowledge. Award recipients serve as examples for how future doctoral students can collaborate in ways that advance nursing science and practice.
