Purpose
The Population Health Informatics and Technology (PHIT) Certificate is an online post-baccalaureate program designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to harness the power of data in advancing public and population health. Through coursework that emphasizes health information systems including public health, data visualization, electronic data exchange, population health, consumer engagement tools, and health IT implementation, the PHIT Certificate prepares graduates to effectively apply informatics solutions that improve health outcomes. Central to the program is a commitment to advancing health equity by enabling learners to utilize data-driven insights to address disparities and promote more inclusive, equitable approaches to population health.

The PHIT certificate will
- Prepare learners to tap into the power of data for improving public and population health.
- Provide opportunities to learn about tools for consumer engagement in health, data visualization, information systems for public and population health, electronic data exchange methods and health information technology implementation.
- Facilitate the utilization of data for health equity.
Eligibility and advantages
- Open to both health and non-health majors.
- Inter-professional program with appeal across health-related disciplines.
- Fulfills elective needs for public health, health informatics and other degree programs.
- Can be completed as a stand-alone certificate program.
- Use the credits towards a higher degree (e.g., DNP in Nursing Informatics)
Requirements / Credits
The certificate requires the completion of 12 credits of graduate course work. Students may be able to petition out of 40 percent of credits, based on courses taken elsewhere and/or request credit for relevant work experience.

Application Requirements
- A minimum of a baccalaureate degree in health-related field
- 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
- If your native language is not English, you must demonstrate English language proficiency based upon the University of Minnesota Graduate School requirements
