Associate Professor Carolyn Porta was inducted as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. Additional inductees are Kuei-Min Chen, Helga Jonsdottir, Barbara Tomczyk, Martha Hughesdon Turner and Richard Westphal.

Demand for health care is rising due to an aging and growing population, but the supply of primary care physicians is declining. One solution? Nurse practitioners (NPs) who can perform many of the basic tasks that primary care doctors do — assess patients, diagnose diseases, develop care plans and prescribe medications.

Dr. Dianne Willer-Sly is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota. In 1986, she was a founding board member of the Austin Area Nurse Practitioner Alliance and in 1989 became a founding board member of Texas Nurse Practitioners. Subsequently, she helped to establish Minnesota Nurse Practitioners in 2009, of which she is now President.
