Margaret Ann Newman, PhD, RN, FAAN who served as a nurse theorist and professor at the University of Minnesota from 1984 to 1996, died Dec. 18 at the age of 85. She is widely known for her theory of health as expanding consciousness and published the earliest primer on developing nursing theory, Theory Development in Nursing.

Each year the Academic Health Center at the University of Minnesota identifies the most distinguished scientists, educators and clinicians within its ranks to be inducted into the Academies for Excellence.

The Journal of Vascular Nursing selected an article by Assistant Professor Laura Kirk, PhD, RN, as the winner of its 21st annual Writing Award. Kirk’s article was selected above all featured articles published by the journal in 2018.

Joanne Disch, PhD, RN, FAAN, was named a Living Legend by the American Academy of Nursing. The Academy’s highest honor, the award recognizes those who have made exceptional contributions to the field throughout their careers.

Nurse leaders from across the state gathered at McNamara Alumni Center on Feb. 27 to gain tools and resources they could use to turn ideas into reality at the fourth annual Planting Seeds of Innovation Conference.

Community members from the Hue-MAN Partnership and researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing are collaborating on research to help racial and ethnic minority communities better understand how to leverage community strengths to address the opioid epidemic. The research aims to address the health disparities caused by social stigma and structural bias and shift the conversation from stigma to strengths.

Katie Huffling, executive director of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, will be talking about the environment, health disparities and opportunities for action at a Nov. 29 event sponsored by the School of Nursing. 

Assistant Professor Melissa Horning, PhD, RN, PHN, earned a High-Impact Award from the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior for writing one of the publication’s most-cited articles of 2017.

Associate Professor Casey Hooke, PhD, APRN, CPON, PCNS-BC, was selected as a fellow to the American Academy of Nursing. The achievement is considered one of the highest honors in the nursing profession.
