The Inaugural Interdisciplinary Aging Science and Care Lecture Series was held on October 3, where Professor Kuei-Min Chen, PhD, RN, FAAN, College of Nursing, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan spoke on "Developing and Translating Innovative Exercise Programs for Older Adults".
Kuei-Min Chen (PhD '00, MS '96) is an established gerontological health expert working to advance health and well-being of older adults in Taiwan and around the world. She is the 2018 recipient of the University’s GPS Alliance Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals.

Students will have an opportunity to enhance their knowledge, skills and comfort in working with gender diverse populations after the University of Minnesota School of Nursing was awarded a grant to create an interprofessional simulation experience with standardized patients who are transgender and non-binary.

Assistant Professor Carrie Neerland, PhD, APRN, CNM, FACNM, was named a finalist for the 2019 Mary Ann Shah New Author Award awarded by the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health. This award is given to a certified nurse-midwife who publishes for the first time as the primary author of an original research or review article in the journal. Neerland was the primary author of Maternal Confidence for Physiology Childbirth: A Concept Analysis.

The 2017 “Best Graduate Schools” rankings published by US News and World Report today ranked the University of Minnesota’s School of Nursing 12th in the nation among schools offering the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, the highest-level practice degree for nurses.

Christine Mueller, PhD, RN, FGSA, FAAN, professor and senior executive associate dean for academic programs, received the President’s Award for Outstanding Service. The award recognizes faculty or staff who have gone well beyond their regular duties and have demonstrated an unusual commitment to the University community.

Associate Professor Karen Monsen, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAMIA, received two awards at the Midwest Nursing Research Society’s 43rd Annual Research Conference held in Kansas City March 27-30.

The Minnesota Nursing Student Board (MNSB) received the Tony Diggs Excellence Award for Outstanding Collaboration for its work on Wellness Week.
The MNSB collaborated with six student boards to organize the first Wellness Week in November 2018, highlighting many of the University resources that encourage mental, physical and nutritional wellness and each of the boards hosted activities. The MNSB hosted a Nutrition Day where it provided information about nutrition and made protein bites for students.

An exemplary partnership between the University of Minnesota School of Nursing and Fairview Health Services/University of Minnesota Health system was recognized in Washington DC this week by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing for its national leadership and innovation.

Margaret Ann Newman, PhD, RN, FAAN who served as a nurse theorist and professor at the University of Minnesota from 1984 to 1996, died Dec. 18 at the age of 85. She is widely known for her theory of health as expanding consciousness and published the earliest primer on developing nursing theory, Theory Development in Nursing.
